Aleatoric interactive installation, created by Pawel Janicki in WRO Art Centre in 2013, is a new work by the artist regularly exploring the relations between visual arts and sound. The installation is inspired by and pays the homage to the ouvre of Lutoslawski.

The installation transfers image and sound using DJ’s techniques. Visitors, using three turntables provided by the installation, may individually or collectively experiment, by modifying the percussion piece specially recorded for the installation. It begins with a short invocation by Lutoslawski on aleatoric music and its principles.

Visitors may use any standard turntable technique: slow-down, stop or accelerate the  turn by pressing the record with their fingers, scratching, moving the needle to another position on the record, etc., thus controlling individual parts of the video projection and modifying the image.

Moreover the installation allows for interaction using mobile devices (tablets, smartphones) as well network communication (using the specially developed online application).

Premiered during 15th Media Art Biennale WRO 2013.

The audiovisual component of the installation was recorded in the ATM studio in Wrocław on April 15th, 2013.

The kettledrum was lent by the Grażyna Bacewicz 1st Degree Musical School in Wroclaw.

Project LutoScratch carried out in WRO Art Center in cooperation with Adam Mickiewicz Institute with the support of the Institute of Music and Dance as part of the Lutosławski`s Year 2013.


Paweł Janicki (b. 1974) — a Polish independent media artist. Interactive director and producer working with the microsound aesthetics and algorithmic composition. Creator of audiovisual interactive systems, installations, and performances. Curator. Continuously developing software tools and interfaces.

Uneasy to classify, consisting of improvised sound, live programming, communication protocols, and hacking, his works were presented at many prestigious festivals, events and places devoted to contemporary art, including Ars Electronica, Transmediale, Centre Georges Pompidou and the International Media Art Biennale WRO in Wrocław, and won numerous prestigeous awards. His musical net—performance Ping Melody was awarded by the Tokyo University Haramachida in 2004 the ‘’ Grand Prize and gained a nomination for the Viper Festival in Basel. Within the framework of the European project, Moving Stories, he realized an interactive installation Oceanus, and a series of network performances EU_tracer within the framework of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council. These and other projects by Paweł Janicki were listed by the Society of Algorithm among the most crucial events in the development of the genre.

He has worked in cooperation with many artists, as well as the IT industry and educational institutions, including the media faculties of the leading Polish art schools, such as the Intermedia Faculty of the University of Arts in Poznań, Poland.

In the moment, he is associated with the WRO Center for Media Art, Wrocław, Poland, where he currently directs the WRO Laboratory/innovation department. His activities are focused primarily on web applications, as well as audio and sensory systems. He is co—author of the Interactive Playground exhibition, awarded by Poland`s biggest daily „Gazeta Wyborcza” with wARTo. He is also co—founder and longtime member of the well—known collective, Gameboyzz Orchestra Project, exploring lo—fi aesthetic.
