Neil Harbisson was born with achromatopsia, a condition that only allowed him to see in black and white. Together with Adam Montadon, he designed an eyeborg, a cybernetic body apparatus which typically fits on the wearer`s head, and is designed to allow people to perceive colour through sound waves. It works with a head—mounted camera that reads the colours directly in front of a person, and converts them in real—time into sound waves. Harrbison started from recognizing 6 colours. Today he is able to differentiate between 360 colours/sounds. The inclusion of the eyeborg on his passport photo has been claimed by the British government in 2004 to be official recognition of Harbisson as a cyborg.
