Revolve (2011)  A kinetic machine designed to scatter abstract light—patterns into its surrounding space. Hundreds of LEDs are mounted on a fast spinning rectangle performing an algorithmic generative composition consisting of stroboscopic pulses and lines of light. Complex patterns emerge between the fast flashing lights, and the spinning of the object. Resulting in some kind of entity which can be seen as a data flow, a morse signal or even an abstract visual language spoken by the machine itself. ‘Revolve’ is looking for the boundaries of human visual perception. Due to a sensory overload, produced by the stroboscopic light, the after image effect occurs. As a result, the imaginary negative light patterns produced by the retina, become an integral part of the experience, as they mix-up with the light produced by the machine.

Macular is a collective of artists (Joris Strijbos, Eric Parren, Jeroen Molenaar and Daan Johan) researching the interaction between light, sound and movement. The ongoing research is focussed on the creation and manipulation of emergent systems and the possibilities for composition that arise from them. Departing with the idea of musical thinking, the collective builds constantly on an abstract language which is mostly based on rule-systems found in biological processes.

/ Joris Strijbos — a Rotterdam—based artist, working in the fields of expanded (live) cinema, audio performances and kinetic—light—installations. He is one of the persons behind “Macular”, a collective which focus is mainly on the synaesthetic relation and interaction between moving image and sound. Joris Strijbos holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Music at the ArtScience interfaculty of Image and Sound of the Royal Academy of Art in Hague.

Daan Johan — one of the artists active within the macular colective. His main focus is on creating audio/visual instruments and installations with the artist interface as a starting point. In this way he creates systems to compose on for himself and for other artists. Daan Johan holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Music at the ArtScience interfaculty of Image and Sound of the Royal Academy of Art in Hague. /
