VALIE EXPORT (b. 1940 as Waltraud Lehner, later Hoellinger, in Linz) — an eminent Austrian media and performance artist. Considered as one of the most influential, controversial and radical figures of contemporary art. Her often shocking and rebellious work stems from conceptual tendencies manifesting itself in various media genres and forms such as video—space, conceptual photography, body performance, expanded cinema, experimental feature and documentary films.
Her work is owned by collections worldwide including Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; Reina Sophia, Madrid; MOMA, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles.
Since 1968, her works have been shown internationally at Institute of Contemporary Art, London; MOCA; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; MUMOK and Generali Foundation, Vienna; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai; Palais des Beaux—Arts, Brussels; Tate Modern, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, Seoul; Metropolitan Museum, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou; MOMA; Venice Biennale; documenta, Kassel and at festivals including London Underground Film Festival, London International Film Festival; Filmex, Los Angeles; Berlin International Film Festival, as well as film festivals in Cannes, Montreal, Vancouver, San Francisco, Locarno, Hongkong, Sydney, New York and WRO Biennale.
She lives and works in Vienna.
